LATIN ABBREVIATION
Banyak kata-kata bahasa Inggris yang berasal dari bahasa Latin, dan bahkan masih banyak yang dipergunakan hingga sekrang. Bahasa Latin sendiri bisa disebut dengan ‘dead’ language, tetapi masih banyak di gunakan. Latin Abbreviation adalah singkatan bahasa inggris yang berasal dari bahasa Latin.
Berikut adalah beberapa Latin Abbreviation yang sering muncul :
etc. : Et Cetera
etc merupakan singkatan dari et cetera, yang dimaksudkan untuk “and others”, “and the rest” , atau “and so on”.
Contoh :
There are many kinds of water birds (e.g., duck, geese, etc.) that live in the marshlands
e.g : Exempli Gratia
E.g. merupakan singkatan dari exempli gratia, yang dimaksudkan untuk “for example”.
Setelah penulisan e.g., dan tiap contohnya tambahkan tanda “koma” .
Huruf e,g. ataupun i.e. ditulis dengan huruf kecil jika berada di tengah kalimat.
Contoh :
Many cities (e.g., New York, Miami and London) could face serious problems if the sea levels continue to rise.
After work, I’ll walk over to a sports arena, e.g., Thunderdome or Victory Court.
i.e : id est
I.e. merupakan singkaatan dari id est , yang dimaksudkan untuk “in other words”, or “that is”, or “that means”.
Huruf e,g. ataupun i.e. ditulis dengan huruf kecil jika berada di tengah kalimat.
Contoh :
Since the last major global conflict (i.e., World War II) Europe has enjoyed a period of relative peace.
After work, I’ll walk over to that new sports arena, i.e., Thunderdome.

cf. merupakan singkaatan dari confer, yang dimaksudkan untuk “compare with”.
Contoh :
It is not true that Eskimos have hundreds of words for snow; cf. Pullum (1991).
c./ca./cca. : Circa
c./ca./cca. merupakan singkatan dari circa, yang dimaksudkan untuk “around” or “approximately” or “about”. Biasanya muncul dengan tanggal.
Contoh :
when Stonehenge began to be constructed (c. 3000 BCE).
N.B. : Nota Bene
N.B. merupakan singkatan dari Nota Bene, yang maksudnya adalah note well ‘perhatikan dengan benar’.
N.B. penulisanya menggunakan huruf capital.
Contoh :
You will have 60 minutes to complete the test. N.B.: A single 3×5 index card of notes may be used during this exam.
A.M. : ante meridiem
A.M. merupakan singkatan dari ante meridiem, yang maksudnya adalah singkatan untuk menunjukan jam 00:00 – 12:00.
Contoh :
I wake up at 6 A.M.
P.M. : post meridiem
P.M. merupakan singkatan dari post meridiem, yang maksudnya adalah singkatan untuk menunjukan jam 12:00 – 00:00.
Contoh :
I go to bed at 9 P.M
et al. : et alii
et al. merupakan singkatan dari et alii, yang maksudnya adalah “and other people”.
Contoh :
The book was written by Hobbs, Cartwright, Jacobson, et al. (which means that Hobbs, Cartwright, Jacobson and others wrote the article)
Walaupun dari bahasa Latin, tetapi penulisanya baik dalam bentuk latin ataupun singkatan tidak perlu menggunakan huruf italic.
